Seko Fofana announced his retirement from international football on Monday at the age of 31. The midfielder, a cornerstone of the Elephants' triumphant 2024 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, leaves the national team after nine years, 34 caps, and seven goals.

The decision, shared via an Instagram post, comes just 48 hours before head coach Emerse Faé is set to name his first official squad for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. “It is with pride and great gratitude that I had the chance to fight for my country,” Fofana wrote. The player also vowed to remain “the Elephants' number one supporter,” acknowledging the talent of the emerging generation.

Born in Paris, Seko Fofana made his Ivory Coast debut in November 2017. His international journey featured highs, like the continental title won on home soil in February 2024 where he scored the tournament's opening goal against Guinea-Bissau, and lows, including a voluntary absence from the 2021 AFCON. After a transfer from RC Lens to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, he made a notable return in September 2023, reclaiming his role as an engine in midfield alongside Franck Kessié and Jean-Michaël Seri.

His time with the national team also included World Cup action. He started the opening win against Ecuador (1-0) at the 2022 World Cup, came on as a substitute in the loss to Germany (2-1), and did not feature again as the Elephants were eliminated in the round of 16 by Norway.
